Mounts to fork crown Lowers position of cable stop Can be used with any cantis where suitable crown anchoring point is available Increases positivity of the brakes Eliminates brake judder
  • associated with the higher cable stop
  • Comes with 29mm bolt (protruding) from rear of the stop and small toothed washer, plus c. 13 nut - made for countersunk forks.
  • you may need another size nut to fit to deeper or narrower forks
  • you may need longer bolt to fit to older non countersunk forks
  • you may need to add / subtract washer to position the cable stop most effectively above the canti straddle wire - though it will be quite forgiving in that.
  • no worries about it suddenly flopping down, theoretically it could be fitted loose and swivel - the cable top-pull tension will actually center the cable stop and keep it upright - so it doesn't have to bite into the fork crown madly to work properly.
  • Why do canti brakes judder?
A traditional cable stop position (near the top of the headset) can often cause brake judder. The brake pads grab and then fork/headtube/steerer flexes backwards (which is normal). By slightly lengthening the distance between the cable stop and the cantis, this effectively pulls the exposed inner cable a little bit tighter which makes the brakes grab a bit more. This will flex the fork/headtube/steerer a little bit more backwards and so the brakes will grab a bit more -and so on- until something has to give!
Given the ever greater braking force applying to the rim (which is still turning strongly with the momentum of the rider going forwards) the rim eventually slips through the brake blocks. This allows the fork/headtube/steerer to flex forward again and take some of the tension off the brake pads by slightly reducing the distance between the cable stop and the cantis. Then the pads will grab the rim once more and the whole cycle starts all over again.   When all this happens quite a few times a second, you get the 'judder'.
This cable stop situates the exposed cable between the stop and the cantis much lower and therefore bypasses most/all of the flex in the system* that causes the judder.
It does this by reducing the length of exposed inner cable -where all the extra unwanted tension takes place- and by taking all the headtube/steerer flex out of the equation.
Any flex between crown and steerer under braking is eliminated because the cable stop is free to flex forward with the crown.
*despite the fact the brakes grabbing on and off makes the axle end of the forks flex forward and backwards, this is a result -and not a cause- of the problem, the actual flex in the system that is tightening the cable on/off intermittently is mostly/all in the head tube/steerer. -
Very little flex, if any, is in the distance between the crown and the canti bossees - any normal backward flex (whilst braking) in the forks will take place mainly, if not completely, below the canti bosses.
p.s.  Also try to situate your brakes blocks slightly 'toe in' - this will make the brakes more modulated and less grabby and will give more controlled braking. P.S. another way to stop judder is to fit V brakes - or min-V brakes if you are using levers with a caliper/canti pull - like drop bar levers or older mountain bike levers- see my other items for the cheapest set of 4 mini-V brakes if that's the way you want to go -  Cantis do look more trad. and can have batter clearance and have variable mechanical advantage - but V brakes are so much easier to set up and stay set up in comparison.
